Here’s the SKIN-NY on Medical-Grade Skin Care Products

All vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are critical for optimal health. There is overwhelming evidence that vitamin and mineral deficiencies are associated with chronic disease. Even mild deficiencies can cause low energy, low mood and disrupt hormone production.

Even the most health-conscious individuals that consume a varied diet full of vegetable, fruits, healthy protein and fats will have nutrient deficiencies. In my nutrition practice, most of my clients are nutrient deficient. Why is that?

Causes of nutrient deficiencies are:

– Eating too many processed foods, or the SAD diet (Standard American Diet)
– Eating the same foods – most of us eat the same 20 foods
– Stress rapidly depletes nutrients leading to inflammation and further depleting nutrients
– Our bodies are TOXIC, we live in a very toxic world. Over 6 billion pounds of toxins are released into the environment every year from the food we eat, water we drink and air we breathe.

Food grown in soil that lacks nutrients

– Food is shipped from all over the world, by the time it reaches the grocery store the produce has lost most of the nutritional value
– GMO food, non-organic food contains less vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and is full of pesticides
– Genetic Predisposition (SNP’s) Ex: MTHFR and other genetic mutations don’t allow adequate utilization of nutrients from food. Most of us have several genetic mutations of metabolism.
– Malabsorption from gut dysfunction (bloating, heartburn etc.)

Most common symptoms of nutrient deficiencies are:

– Lethargy, tiredness, aches, pains
– Increased anxiety and restlessness
– Brittle hair and nails
– Dry skin, premature aging, brown spots
– Irritability
– Depression
– Brain Fog
– Acne
– Slow or delayed healing (i.e. from surgery procedures)

The most common nutrient deficiencies are:

– Vitamin D: This super vitamin is vital for healthy bones, immune function, insulin resistance, blood pressure and protects from cancer.
– Iron: So many of us are iron-deficient! Iron is essential to make red blood cells.
– Magnesium: This mineral is needed for hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body and plays a role in the health of your lungs, brain, bones, blood vessels. Helps the body handle stress and promotes relaxation.
– B Vitamins: Supports energy production and neurological function.
– Omega-3’s: Healthy fats are crucial for happy mood, healthy heart and brain function, balanced blood sugar and to lower inflammation.

The nutrient deficiencies described above are the most common, however ALL vitamins and minerals are critical for optimal health.
